Sustainability

Sustainability in contemporary dance is about creating a practice that is artistically, emotionally, physically and environmentally able to thrive long-term.

Kinaesthetic (awareness)

Relating to a person’s awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body by means of sensory organs (proprioceptors) in the muscles and joints

Lateral

Anatomy: situated on one side or other of the body or of an organ, especially in the region furthest from the median plane. Lateral thinking: the solving of problems by an indirect and creative approach, typically through viewing the problem in a new and unusual light.

Locomotive/locomotor

Movement or the ability to move from one place to another.

Materiality

The quality or character of being material or composed of matter. The physical properties of objects, bodies, and environments in artistic practices.

Mediated performance

Performances that incorporate digital or technological interfaces, such as video or virtual reality.

Modern dance

Modern Dance emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a rebellion against classical ballet. Pioneers like Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, and José Limón a.o. sought to create a dance form that was expressive, grounded, and free from the rigid structure of ballet.

Modernism

a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart significantly from classical and traditional forms.

Musicality

Musicality is sensitivity to, knowledge of, or talent for music or the quality or state of being musical, and is used to refer to specific if vaguely defined qualities in pieces and/or genres of music

Neo-classical

Neo-classical dance is a style that emerged in the early 20th century as a response to classical ballet. It retains the technical precision and structure of ballet but introduces greater freedom, abstraction, and innovation in movement and form.

Artistic methodologies that actively involve audiences or communities in creative processes.

Performance art

Performance art is an artwork or art exhibition created through actions executed by the artist or other participants. It may be witnessed live or through documentation, spontaneously developed or written, and is traditionally presented to a public in a fine art context in an interdisciplinary mode.
